Top 5 tips for building a successful resume
Finding a job can be hard, there are literally hundreds of applications that recruiters look at daily, what will make your resume stand out from the others? Below are some tips to make your resume the best and get you that interview:
- Make sure your resume is clear and concise. Don’t write to much in paragraphs, dot points are key and information straight to the point. Recruiters will often have to sift through hundreds of resumes, they will be scanning your resume for key words that have been written in the job advertisement.
- I started to touch on this in point 1, make sure you are using the same language in your resume that the job advertisement has. Some new recruitment software will screen resumes on its own, purely by picking out key words within the resume that match the words in the ad. Tailor your resume for each job application in relation to the ad, this will put you ahead of the pack.
- Make sure you have at least 2 recent references with their current contact details. Ensure you have advised these people that you have put them down as a reference and they should expect a call soon.
- Have your work experience clearly marked with name of the company, dates worked and your position title, from there clearly list your responsibilities in this role. Make sure your resume is in order of newest to oldest job clearly identifying your qualifications.
- Make sure all your contact information is correct! This includes your email address; some recruitment software will automatically screen you to the next stage of the recruitment process and it will send you an email to notify you of this. Also ensure you are available by phone as much as possible; a phone conversation is usually the recruiters first attempt at contact and if that goes smoothly you should be getting an interview!
Overall, put yourself out there!
