You Can’t Ask That

Interviews are very exciting for both parties and an essential part of the recruitment process. Here is where to you are first introduced to your potential new employee and where you get to start or, build on your relationship. Getting the questions right is key and should largely focus on questions related to the role, but you can also include behavioural questions, for example, ‘describe a time there was a problem at work and how did you handle it’.

You may even have candidates participate is psychometric testing if the role requires it, but in any interview, the questions below or questions similar in nature, are regarded as illegal. Not illegal in a strict sense, but can attract a potential discrimination law suit which is very real and serious;

  • Are you in a same-sex relationship?
  • How old are you?
  • What’s your ethnic background?
  • What religion are you?
  • Are you pregnant or planning to start a family?
  • Who do you vote for?
  • Do you have a physical or mental disability?
