In 2016, The Queensland State Coordinator-General’s report approved the Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion Project and confirmed the project will deliver major economic and social benefits to the region.
Currently, passengers of Sunshine Coast Airport can fly direct to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Auckland, however with the expansion, this will soon include more destinations across Australia, Asia and the Western Pacific.
At present, the existing runway constrains airline services, but an increased runway will allow for more flight destinations, larger passenger capacity and more fuel-efficient aircraft’s. Not only will this will significantly strengthen national and global connections, but it will also provide much needed infrastructure as it’s expected that the Sunshine Coast broader region will grow in population to more than 500,000 by 2031.
With regards to employment, it is projected that the expansion will generate more than 2230 jobs, as well as complimentary employment opportunities, such as in education, retail, hospitality, tourism, health care and building and construction. Between 2020 and 2040, there will be a $4.1 billion contribution to the Sunshine Coast.
